Daymoist or Mini Japanese Silk? Choosing an Inoar basin treatment

A client's hair being washed and treated at the basin

Choose Daymoist (R170) if your hair feels dry, rough or dull and needs moisture. Choose Mini Japanese Silk (R220) if it feels limp, frizzy or weak and needs protein, softness and shine. Both are Inoar basin treatments on the Soma Blow Wave Bar menu in Pretoria, and both are quick ways to give your hair extra care.

What is a basin treatment?

A basin treatment is a conditioning treatment applied at the wash basin, rather than a separate, more involved in-salon service. It is a simple way to give your hair extra care on the day of a blow wave, cut or colour. The Blow Wave Bar offers two, both from Inoar, and each is built for a different need.

Daymoist: the moisture treatment

Daymoist is the treatment to reach for when your hair is thirsty. Our menu lists its benefits as:

  • Intense Moisture
  • Instant Shine & Restoration
  • Repairs Damaged Hair & Hair Elasticity

Daymoist is also one of Inoar's ranges. Inoar describes its Absolut Daymoist mask as "developed with flower extracts and an exclusive formula with an ultra-hydrating Daymoist CLR" for intense conditioning and shine, recovery of hair elasticity and easy combing. We quote that to show what the range is built around; ask your stylist about the products used in your treatment.

Signs your hair needs moisture

  • It feels dry or straw-like, especially at the ends.
  • It tangles easily and is hard to comb through.
  • It looks dull even after washing.
  • It snaps quickly when stretched, with little give.

Mini Japanese Silk: the protein treatment

Mini Japanese Silk is the one to choose when your hair needs strength and polish. Our menu lists its benefits as:

  • Soft & Shiny Hair
  • Adds Protein
  • Reduces Frizz

It shares its name with Inoar's Japanese Silk line, which Inoar builds around silk proteins and superfood ingredients. Conditioning proteins can coat and smooth the surface of the strand, which is why protein treatments often leave hair feeling softer and looking shinier.

Signs your hair needs protein

  • It feels limp or mushy when wet.
  • It stretches a long way before breaking and does not spring back.
  • It will not hold a style and frizzes easily.
  • It has been lightened, permed or heat styled often.

How do I know if my hair needs protein or moisture?

A simple check at home is the stretch test. Take a single shed strand of wet hair and gently stretch it. Hair that stretches a little and returns is usually balanced. Hair that stretches a lot and does not spring back may need protein, while hair that snaps almost immediately with little stretch may need moisture.

It is a rough guide, not a diagnosis. Hair can need different things at the roots and the ends, and needs often change with the seasons: Pretoria's dry winters tend to leave hair thirsty, while summer humidity can bring out frizz. Ask your stylist to look at your hair if you are unsure.

Can I add a basin treatment to my blow wave?

Basin treatments pair naturally with a blow wave. Blow drying uses heat, and conditioning beforehand can leave hair softer, shinier and easier to style. Our adult Volume Blow Wave is R290, one price for all hair lengths. Ask about adding a basin treatment when you book.

Regular blow wave clients can also get one through the Blow Wave Club:

Pay for 4 blow waves and receive 10% off as well as 1 x basin treatment (must be used within 6 weeks).

Basin treatment or a full in-salon treatment?

A basin treatment is a top-up. If your hair needs more than a boost, our menu has two fuller Inoar treatments. The Japanese Super Silk Treatment (R590 - R1 020) is Inoar's in-salon superfood treatment for moisture, gloss and lubrication. The Brazilian Blow Wave (R800 - R2 800, length dependent) is a smoothing treatment that Inoar says reduces frizz and volume for up to 3 months with the correct homecare.

How often should I have a basin treatment?

There is no fixed rule. Hair that is coloured, lightened or blow dried several times a week tends to lose moisture and strength faster, so it often benefits from a treatment at most visits. Hair in good condition may only need one now and then, for example before an event or after a holiday in the sun. A practical approach is to judge by feel: if your hair is harder to style, duller or rougher than usual, it is a good day to add one. Your stylist can also tell you how your hair responded last time.

Getting the most from a basin treatment

  • Tell your stylist how your hair has felt lately: dry, limp, frizzy or fine.
  • Use a heat protectant at home before blow drying or straightening.
  • Wash with a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo, which can be kinder to treated hair.
  • Switch between moisture and protein as your hair changes, rather than sticking with one forever.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for frizz, Daymoist or Mini Japanese Silk?

Mini Japanese Silk lists reduced frizz among its benefits, alongside soft, shiny hair and added protein, so it is usually the one to try first for frizz. That said, very dry hair also tends to frizz, and in that case Daymoist's moisture may help more. If you cannot decide, describe how your hair feels to your stylist and ask for a recommendation.

Can I alternate between the two basin treatments?

Yes. Hair needs often change with the season, with colour and with how much heat styling you do, so alternating can make sense. A common pattern is moisture when hair feels dry and rough, and protein when it feels limp or overly stretchy. Your stylist can suggest which to choose on the day based on how your hair looks and feels.

Is a basin treatment worth it if I only come in for a blow wave?

It can be. A blow wave involves heat, and a conditioning treatment beforehand can leave hair softer, shinier and easier to style. At R170 for Daymoist or R220 for Mini Japanese Silk, it is a smaller step than a full in-salon treatment. Blow Wave Club members also receive one basin treatment with their package of four blow waves.

Is Mini Japanese Silk the same as the Japanese Super Silk Treatment?

They are separate items on our menu. Mini Japanese Silk is a basin treatment at R220, focused on soft, shiny hair, added protein and less frizz. The Inoar Japanese Super Silk Treatment is a full in-salon treatment at R590 - R1 020, which Inoar describes as a superfood treatment for moisture, gloss and lubrication. Ask your stylist which suits your hair.

Do basin treatments help coloured hair?

Colour and lightening can raise the cuticle and leave hair drier and more porous, so coloured hair often benefits from regular conditioning. Daymoist is the moisture option and Mini Japanese Silk adds protein, and lightened hair sometimes needs both over time. Tell your stylist about your colour history so they can suggest the right treatment for where your hair is now.
